Idea Generation

For the Birds

For the birds was an exploratory project that focused on quick idea generation.

It’s funny where inspiration can come from. I remember starting this project in the spring when birds were just starting to chirp in the morning. I was in the process of learning a new technique for a badge project when this idea took flight.

Description

For The Birds is a branding and identity project focused on rapid ideation and logo creation.

Names and color palettes were put together to represent start-up businesses in their respective industries.

What started out as one logo, quickly became ten.

I initially only planned to do five logos. I ended up with 50 total designs. All names and color palettes were completed within a day.

The logomark is strong displayed in black and white, but I had a lot of fun exploring various colors combinations.

Design Process

The best part of this project was moving as quickly as possible to the next idea. I tapped out at 50 ideas, but I think I could have kept pushing for more.

When non-designers look at a design project like this, they see the final product and what seems to be a simple solution and easy process to follow (maybe too easy).

While it may seem simple or easy to think up 5-10 logo ideas for a bird brand, try 30. Try 50.

What I appreciated about this project was the self-placed constraints of using:

  • The same logo icon
  • The same font
  • The same bird theme

Using the same font did make this exercise challenging. By playing with color combos that matched the brand name, it helped me finish one idea and move on to the next.

Some of the initial ideas I was working with have small embellishments, but overall the font chosen was unaltered due to the time constraint.

I am planning to build out some of these into their own projects in the future.

Doing exercises like this is a helpful reminder to push as many ideas out as quickly as possible to find the one that is ready to fly.
